I’m Jeanne Burris Johnson, a contemporary painter and mixed media artist working in photorealism, glass, and constructed surfaces. I’m interested in the quiet tension that comes from doing something difficult well and in the moment a piece earns its authority by needing nothing added or taken away.
My work has appeared in juried and invitational exhibitions and is held in private collections across the United States. Alongside my studio practice, I’ve worked extensively inside gallery and artist-run organizations, including gallery ownership and nonprofit leadership roles in programming and operations. My field experience includes exhibition development, artist relations, curation, art education, community arts initiatives, professional development services for artists, and grant writing for arts organizations. That dual perspective shapes how the work is made, presented, and released, with clarity, structure, and long-term intent.
I am a Manifest Gallery alumnus and a member of the Detroit Artists Market and the Scarab Club.
Credentials are useful. The work has to hold visually, materially, and over time.

Jeanne Burris Johnson builds work slowly and on purpose. Her paintings, mixed media pieces, and fused glass are grounded in precision, restraint, and an unwillingness to settle for what’s merely attractive. She’s drawn to moments that aren’t posed or perfected, images that hold because they’ve been resolved, not polished.
Her work has appeared in juried exhibitions and is held in private collections across the United States. Her background includes years of working inside galleries as well as building her own practice, a perspective that quietly shapes how the work is made, presented, and released into the world. This is a long practice. Built to last.
I don’t chase trends or paint crowd-pleasers. I build work that lasts.
Ordinary moments interest me most, especially when they’re pushed. Whether it’s a photorealistic painting that makes you hesitate, or kiln-fired glass and collage that plays with texture and structure, every piece is built to hold space and earn attention. Nothing is accidental. Nothing is filler.
